" Sports in Inverness is great, Bill Dunphy explains, There is more going on as far as sports in Inverness than there is in cities. People are very involved in Inverness and if it wasn't for volunteers there would probably be nothing. Luckily we have kind , honest people who volunteered and made sports in Inverness possible." Dunphy is the Sports Editor for The Inverness Oran, the town's weekly newspaper.

Hockey and baseball are the more popular sports. Then volleyball, basketball, softball, and curling is gaining in popularity as well as many others. The history of sports goes back to the towns inception and stories of the talent to this day still entertain and amaze.

"The talent in Inverness is unreal. We have many championship wins on the front page of The Inverness Oran .Opportunities do exist for players of sports here in Inverness and they can make it all the way to the top. For instance look at Ali Mac Eachern playing hockey with the Halifax Mooseheads and Randy Copley drafted to the New York Rangers 40th overall ,"says Dunphy.

Another popular sporting attraction in Inverness is the Inverness Raceway with it's live harness racing . Currently it is operated by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation. It is the smallest rural raceway in the Maritimes. Race cards are held on Sunday in June and September and Wednesday and Sunday in July and August.

The raceway enhances the area because it attracts people from all areas of Nova Scotia and the Maritimes as well as tourists. It is an exciting brand of entertainment that caters to family fun.

Family oriented activities is what you will find at the Inverness Arena as well. Volunteers and community support have kept this building running. Built in the 1970's this facility continues to promote sports in the Inverness area. Hockey games, curling and public skating ensure that many cold winter nights are passed with family and friends.
